The 2026 Lincoln County Lincoln Day Dinner.

The Liberty Gala will be an evening dedicated to celebrating 250 years of American freedom, honoring the principles that built our nation, and recommitting ourselves to the responsibility of preserving liberty for future generations.

Rooted in God, faith, family, and freedom, the evening will feature inspiring speakers who will reflect on the values that have sustained our country through generations and the role each of us has in carrying those values forward.

This is more than a celebration of our nation's past. It is an opportunity to come together as a community, honor those who came before us, strengthen the principles we share, and inspire the next generation to understand that liberty is both a blessing and a responsibility.

Honoring Our Past. Defending Our Freedom. Inspiring Our Future.

One Nation. One Legacy. 250 Years of Liberty.

John Shubeck - God

Marine Corps Veteran • Farmer • Coach • Community Leader

John Shubeck was born in 1981 to Paul and Carol Shubeck and grew up with his three siblings in Centerville, South Dakota. His father farmed while his mother stayed home to raise their family. John attended Centerville Public School from kindergarten through 12th grade, participating in nearly every activity the school offered. He even managed to play the trumpet—although, as his wife will attest, rhythm may not be one of his strengths. John graduated from Centerville High School in 2000.

Military Service

After high school, John began college and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserves in 2001. He enrolled in the Officer Candidates School program in 2002 and was mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.

After returning to college, John walked onto the University of South Dakota track and field team. Competing in the decathlon and pentathlon, he was part of four North Central Conference Championship teams. He graduated in 2006, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, and entered active duty.

John led a reinforced platoon in Iraq during a 2008–2009 deployment and later led a company of Marines in Afghanistan in 2011. In 2012, he left active duty and returned to South Dakota, where he earned a master's degree in Plant Science from South Dakota State University.

John continued serving in the Marine Corps Reserves and completed more than 20 years of service in November 2021. During his military career, he commanded Marine Corps units across the United States and around the world.

His military honors include the Bronze Star Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Farming & Coaching

John began farming while attending graduate school, bringing cattle back to the Shubeck farming operation. In 2014, John and his wife, Megan, moved back to Centerville, where he began farming full-time while continuing his Marine Corps Reserve service and coaching track.

From 2014–2016, John served as an assistant track coach at Mount Marty University, coaching several All-Americans and national meet qualifiers.

In 2016, he became head track coach at Centerville High School. Over the years, John has coached hundreds of student-athletes, including state champions and numerous state meet placers. His teams have earned five consecutive girls conference team championships and three top-eight finishes at the state meet. He has also helped seven athletes go on to earn college track and field scholarships.

Faith & Community

John was part of the leadership team that planted Seed Community Church in Centerville. In 2020, he joined a group of Christians who began meeting at the Centerville American Legion with the goal of establishing a new church.

Drawing on planning and leadership skills developed during his Marine Corps career, John helped build the church from the ground up. Seed Community Church has since grown to an average attendance of approximately 110 people each Sunday and is preparing to plant another church.

John remains involved in veterans' organizations and agricultural advocacy organizations. In 2025, following the passing of Richard Vasgaard, John was appointed to complete his term representing South Dakota District 16 in the House of Representatives.

Family

John and Megan have been married for 19 years and have four children, all of whom attend Centerville Public School.

Whether serving his country, working on the farm, coaching young athletes, helping build his church, or volunteering in his community, service has remained a consistent part of John's life.

And, as John admits, he still has a difficult time saying no when someone asks him to help, including when the request involves a speaking engagement.

Bill Kortemeyer - Country

Bill Kortemeyer grew up in Chancellor, South Dakota, graduating from Chancellor High School in 1959 and South Dakota State University in 1963 with a bachelor's degree in Economics and Business Administration. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.

He was promoted to Captain while serving in Vietnam and received the Tactical Air Command Junior Supply Officer Award, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and National Defense Medal. He was released from active duty in October 1967 and honorably completed his military service in 1969.

Bill's return home from Vietnam profoundly shaped his view of service and remembrance. Like many Vietnam veterans, his homecoming was difficult. He recalls being advised not to wear his uniform off base because of protesters and says it took decades before he again felt pride in his service. That changed at the 2006 dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Pierre, when he heard the words, "Welcome home." Since then, veterans memorials have held special meaning for him.

Bill has called Canton and Lincoln County home for nearly three decades and continues to speak passionately about honoring veterans, remembering their sacrifices, and ensuring future generations understand the meaning of service.

Russ Swanson - Community

Russ Swanson grew up on his family's homestead along the banks of the Big Sioux River seven miles north of Canton, SD.  Today he lives on the western edge of this farm which has been in his family since 1870.

After graduating from Canton High School, Russ attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, where he graduated with degrees in animal science and agricultural education. He is currently in his 29th year of teaching civil engineering and ag education at Canton High School where he also serves as the school’s CTE Director and the FFA Advisor.

An interest in local history and an accidental discovery in one of his horse pastures led Russ on an eight year research project which turned into a lecture series and a book regarding one of the most famous outlaw gangs of the old west.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at The Canton Barn for our annual Lincoln Day Dinner! With over 180 people in attendance, the evening was a tremendous success and a true celebration of community and conservative values.

We were treated to a fantastic meal catered by Sioux Valley Grille, followed by engaging and dynamic remarks from Speaker of the House Jon Hansen and former Speaker Steve Haugaard. Their insights and energy truly inspired the crowd.

Guests also enjoyed a fun and lively silent auction, as well as some delicious treats during the dessert auction!  Thank you to all who donated and bid!

We are incredibly grateful for the continued support from our friends, volunteers, and community leaders. Your commitment makes events like this possible.
